Rodney Green went through a difficult period as a youth and lived a hard life on the streets. Finally recognizing the futility of his lifestyle, he prayed for help and turned his life around, becoming an ordained minister in 1999. With compassion for the poor in Durham, he began his life’s work by founding Changing a Generation Outreach Ministries. Rev. Green started out by providing hot meals from his car to the needy and homeless in 2000 and earned the name “Parking Lot Pastor”. In 2003, he established a downtown ministry in the heart of Durham, where he expanded his outreach ministry by providing meals to the poor.

Rev. Green now provides many and varied services to Durham’s needy, including food distribution at the Mission House, food distribution to nursing homes, churches and to other organizations that prepare meals for the needy. To do this, he works closely with the North Carolina Food Bank and the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle.
Saturdays during warm months, free haircuts are provided on the porch of the Mission House by the students of Daydreamers barber academy, under the supervision of Instructor Corey Bell, who is also a coach at Duke University. As Rev. Green puts it, having a haircut is important because it gives a person self-esteem when looking for a job. It is common for the barbers to cut more than 50 heads each Saturday.
